Damen alliance helps Cotecmar in bid to be top shipbuilder (Lloyd's List)

COTECMAR has taken a further step towards its goal of becoming the leading shipbuilder and shiprepair specialist in the Caribbean by securing a strategic alliance with Damen.

The Dutch yard will join forces with the Cartagena-based facility to begin construction of state-of-the-art tugs for the first time.

Jorge Luis Velez Ballesteros, director of Cotecmar’s Mamonal yard, says he is optimistic the company will start construction of the first two Damen 2206 vessels later this year.

It has already started investing to modernise its vessel design capabilities with the implementation of the Tribon software employed by Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering.

It is also in talks with the Inter American Development Bank to secure $25m of funding to construct a drydock capable of handling larger vessels. This would open the door to other ventures, including the possibility of building a handysize vessel for Navesco. The Colombian shipping line has expressed its interest in building a 7,000 dwt handysize in Colombia in association with Dutch yard Bodewes.

A project of this kind, however, will only be possible with further investment to expand its drydock capacity.

Today, the Mamonal facility is equipped with a Syncrolift with a capacity of 3,600 tonnes and a draft of 5.8 m. The lift allows the company to work on vessels of up to 120 m in length and 20 m in width while the yard’s berthing facilities allow the company to carry out repairs on larger vessels alongside. It has seven docking positions at the Mamonal facility.

The company has another operation capable of handling vessels of up to 1,200 gt in Bocagrande opposite the country’s leading container terminal, Sociedad Portuaria Regional de Cartagena.

According to Cotecmar’s commercial director Ruben Gonzalez, the company handled 80 ships using the drydock with 40% of the company’s workload in 2005 accounted for by newbuilding projects and 60% in repairs.

Some 65% of the shipyard’s repair book was work from third parties with another third work for the Colombian Navy. Its international orderbook has won the company recognition by export body Pro-Export as one of the best Colombian companies working in the services industry.

The navy-owned operation has adopted an increasingly aggressive approach to winning international business in the last two years, seeking to use more of its capacity for international clients operating in the Caribbean.

As well as its core repair business, the company remains active in shipbuilding projects for the Colombian government and private clients.

In the military sphere, its role as the key ship and military hardware repair specialist for the Colombian navy and army, as well as the construction of high-speed response vessels for the navy, has continued to boost its orderbook. It continues to refine its ground-breaking riverboat design for the Colombian navy. The sixth Nodriza vessel was recently completed and has been deployed in the fight against armed guerrillas and drug smugglers in the country’s 13,000 km network of rivers.

The latest version of the heavily-armoured Nodriza vessel is built to travel at 18 km/hr and is equipped with helicopter-landing pads.

“We want to get to a point where we can export our designs internationally,” says Cotecmar vice-president Juan Carrillo Quintana.
